Social Exclusion and Youth Delinquency
JOURNAL OF YOUTH RESEARCHES
Conclusion
When obtained data is evaluated, it is observed that the youth with deliquency is exposed
to social exclusion at low and medium level instead of high level social exclusion. The
statistical results actualized with the data obtained in the consequence of applied social
exclusion scale also show the verification of hypothesis.
In the field study, monthly income average as well as education level and unemploy-
ment appear the factors that determine the exclusion that young delinquent experience
in economic area. It seems possible to handle unemployment as an important obstacle
for social integration of delinquency of young people particularly. Over the course of dep-
th interview the delinquent youth has frequently pointed out that they have resorted to
criminal behaviour because of unemployment. Interviewers have also specified that they
could not find job owing to being stigmatized as criminal after prison, so are excluded
from labour market. Fighting against unemployment, a significant variable for that young
delinquent subject to social exclusion appear quite important in terms of prevention of
social exclusion.
It is determined in the field research that compared to other sub-dimensions, social exc-
lusion level is higher for “Social Inclusion” sub-dimension which is described as young
delinquent feel themselves excluded from society, have limited number person to estab-
lish social relation, have no friends to share his/her secrets, person sees very little support
from his/her friends and experience problem for his/her relationships with others.
The expression of individual “I feel/have felt excluded” is one of the key indicators that a
person exposes to social exclusion. This expression and similar ones are frequently used
by many young delinquent during depth interview.
As regards to the emergence of youth delinquency, the study indicated two different ef-
fects of social exclusion on youth in before and after crime are observed during. In other
words, exclusion may either takes place before criminal behaviour, or comes in sight after
young carries out criminal behaviour and legal mechanisms conducted. While social exc-
lusion experienced before crime becomes efficient for turning into criminal behaviour due
to the lack of integration with society of young, in case of exclusion seen after crime, as a
result of tagging young as “criminal/convict” by society, healthy integration with society is
hindered. This situation leads to the repetition of crime for the youth deliquented.
Fighting against social exclusion is important for maintaining social order and the exis-
tence of a healthy society. Youth is one of the important phases where life of individuals is
shaped. Thus, the measures to provide the integration of youth with society and to keep
them out of risk of exclusion should be taken. Government programs should implement
the policies that cover all the youth and ensure their social integration in the areas like
education, employment, health, etc.
