Hale and FitzGerald in their studies titled “Social Exclusion and Crime” (Hale and FitzGe-
rald, 2007: 142) have dealt the relationship between social exclusion and the crime from
three different aspects. These are sorted as the role of labour market, economic partici-
pation as consumer and the effect of criminal justice system.
Hale and FitzGerald draw attention to the increasing tendency for criminal behaviour whi-
ch is seen for the individuals who become marginalized economically and are excluded
from labour market by stating that labour market has important effects on social exclu-
sion and crime. Hale and FitzGerald have established that the innovations especially in
technological area are consumed extensively by youth today. Participation of individual in
society, therefore, firms conduct commercial campaigns towards youth and direct them
to fast consumption, in cases youth fails to meet conditions economically, they regard
criminal behaviour as a solution with the aim of not to be excluded from society (Hale and
FitzGerald, 2007: 142).
At this point, they experience cell phone theft that increases rapidly among young de-
liquency in recent years. The effect of criminal justice system on exclusion is expressed
as follows. The individual who is punished by the system is tagged by going to prison or
bears the feature of being excluded potentially (Hale and FitzGerald, 2007: 142).
In expressing criminal behaviour, social exclusion emerges as a key concept. Social exc-
lusion described as status of individual for being deprived from tangible or intangible
possibilities partially or completely is among the risk factors that may have an impact on
the realization of criminal behaviour especially the crimes committed at early age. In the
situation that individuals fail to produce solution to the structural and individual problems
encountering in transition period from childhood to adulthood and subjecting to the social
exclusion of persons may have facilitating impacts on turning into crime. Tagging the
young who perform criminal behaviour as delinquent in society following this behaviour
constitutes an obstacle for the social integration of individual.
Method
In accordance with the purpose of the research, qualitative and quantitative research
methods are used in field research. As the part of the research, “Social Exclusion Scale”
consisting of two parts is applied to 234 persons in Istanbul Probation Directorate. While
the first chapter of this scale covers socio-demographic variables, second chapter is
made up of the questions developed to measure social exclusion. As a result of analysing
the data obtained through quantitative research method in field study, a need for strengt-
hening emerged results is emerged. In this regard, by using depth interview with a sample
group, it is reached to detailed data related to social exclusion processes and experience.
In this context, depth interviews are made with 18 persons at the age range of 18-30 in
Ankara Probation Directorate.
