education in somewhere other than the city where we work. This causes both financial
trouble and emotional distress.”
2. Expectations From Doctoral Education;Use the expectations from doctoral education
involved the following themes: expectations from the educator, expectations from the
educational method and the curriculum, expectations from thesis and research efforts,
expectations from the studentship the expectations of the standards of the doctoral
education, and expectations from the educational institution. The students made various
statements about the expectations from the educator theme. Student No. 1 expressed
her opinion as follows: “Educators should create an environment of discussion where
students can improve and express themselves.” Student No. 6 said: “Educators should
support students’ personal development.” Within the scope of the expectations from the
educational method and the curriculum theme, Student No. 1 added: “The curriculum
should be different from that of the undergraduate program.” Within the scope of the
expectations from thesis and research efforts theme, Student No. 11 said: “It must be en-
sured that the subject of the thesis is related with the expertise of the faculty members in
the department and advisors should be assigned according to the subject of the thesis.”
Student No. 2 expressed her opinion about the expectations from the student theme as
follows: “When starting their doctoral education, students should know what they should
do on which step of the 4-year doctoral education.” Within the scope of expectations of
the standards of the doctoral education theme, Student No. 5 said: “It should be ensured
that the doctoral education in our country has standards. The quality should not change
according to the university or professors.” Student No. 5 expressed her opinion about the
expectations from the educational institution theme as follows: “Educational institutions
should be placed where the student and the professor can work together.”
Discussion
Within the scope of the negative opinions regarding the educator theme under the neg-
ative opinions regarding doctoral education category which was created as a result of
examining research questions separately, the students expressed their discomfort due to
not being able to criticize their professors and having to be dependent on their advisors.
Similarly, the doctoral education in nursing was discussed in a symposium held in the
High School of Nursing, Dokuz Eylül University in 2002 and it was noted that the students
did not have the freedom to choose their advisors and experienced problems related to
faculty membership and advisory criteria (Akdemir, Özdemir, Akyar 2011, pp. 50-58). In
the light of the aforementioned, we recommend that the programs which have an insuf-
ficient number of educators should not accept students for nursing education, the need
for qualified faculty members should be satisfied urgently and planned manner and pro-
motive measures should be taken to eliminate the imbalance between higher educational
institutions in terms of the number and the competence of faculty members.
