Solidarity in Turkish Families:
A Research on the Youth*

Abstract
A sample of 1006 young people age between 15-29 from the socio-economic levels participated in
the study, and their intergenerational solidarity were determined by the theory Bengtson’s Intergen-
erational solidarity. This study aims to determine intergenerational normative solidarity in families,
and examine the relationship between their scores on normative solidarity, and the other dimensions
of intergenerational solidarity (Affectual solidarity, Associational solidarity, Consensual solidarity,
Functional solidarity, Structural solidarity) and socio-demographic factors. In the research, Inter-
generational Normative Solidarity and Consensual Solidarity, Age, Supporting Parent/Grandparent
(Functional Solidarity), parent/grandparent education status being undergraduate and postgraduate,
number of sisters, employment status being not-employed, parent/grandparent education status
being high school graduate, gender being female and number of brothers were found statistically
significant. While the most important factor affecting Intergenerational Normative Solidarity is Con-
sensual Solidarity (β=0,219), other factors were found to be, respectively, Age, Supporting Parent/
Grandparent (Functional Solidarity), parent/grandparent education status being undergraduate and
postgraduate, number of sisters, employment status being not-employed, parent/grandparent edu-
cation status being high school graduate and gender being female and number of brothers.
