An Analysis on The Opinions About Lowering The Age of Candidacy
To 18
In Turkey, one of the youngest population in Europe, the debate about the age of candi-
dacy lasted from the past to the present day. The right to be elected at the age of 30, as
set out in the Constitution of 1924, continued in the constitutions of 1961 and 1982. With
the amendment of the law, it was reduced to 25 by Law No. 5551, which was initiated
by the AK Party in 2006. As of this date, the discussions on the age of candidacy have
not ended and finally the age of candidacy in the constitutional amendment package
prepared by the AK Party and the Nationalist Movement Party has been requested to
be lowered to the age of 18. This amendment was also accepted with the constitutional
amendment referendum of 16 April 2017.
