Ethics and Youth in Modern Society
Young People in Terms of Ethics of Violence
In modern society, violence has become as widespread as possible (Han, 2016). In this
meaning, young people are both affected by widespread violence and become the obje-
cts of national and global terrorist organizations.
Religion, Faith, Ethics and Youth
Every religion utters the moral and ethical rules that aim to put the behavior of the indivi-
dual and the society in harmony with the truths that he has revealed. When it comes to Is-
lamic ethics, it is seen that the source of ethics is the Islamic religion and the faith in Allah,
and even the faith in Allah is a good ethical act. The Qur’an reveals this in an open style
(for example see Bakara 2/177). It is very meaningful that Bukhari brings close together
the hadiths on faith and ethics in Kitab al-Iman. When we look at the way and speed of
the spread of Islam, It is seen that the Prophet Muhammed’s (saw) being model with His
beautiful ethics and trustworthiness (Muhammed al-Emîn) is influential on the first plan
(Berki & Keskioglu, 1991, s. 212).
It is also very important to examine the situation of youth in terms of all these moral and
ethical issues. Whether the moral dimensions of Jews, Christians, Muslim, etc. individuals
and groups conform to the ethical directives of their own religions and beliefs is a matter
worthy to be considered and investigated.
Youth and Ethics of Responsibility
Responsibility is directly related to ethics (Topçu, 1985). Today, one of the most impor-
tant points that young people face as a moral problem in modern society is the ethics of
responsibility.
Youth as an Object of Abuse
Modernity has made young people the object of a network of versatile and profound abu-
ses. In modern society, youth is abused, misused, an exploited in many places.
Consumption
Consumption emerges as one of the most distinctive features of modernity and modern
society. In the modern society as a consumer society, the social category in which con-
sumption, consumption madness, and consumerism most effect is probably youth.
Abuse of Body
One of the areas where modernity exploits young people on ethical plane is body. In
today’s modern and postmodern societies, the individual focuses on human body by
means of media such as telephone, television, radio, printed and visual media, especially
Internet provides the individuals with devices to exhibit their bodies (Okumuş, 2009).
