Normative solidarity positively interacts with the number of sisters and the number of
brothers. It can be expected that the reason for this is that as the number of individuals in
the family increase, commitment to family increases and normative solidarity attitude and
behaviors regarding family is in a positive interaction through motivation of ownership.
Likewise, the fact that the participant is female is one of the factors affecting normative
solidarity, which can be explained by the accepted opinion in the literature that women
are much more attached to their families (Seelbach, 1977, 1978; Seelbach and Sauer,
1977; Blieszner and Mancini, 1987).
In this study, normative solidarity of young people was interacting and significant with
supporting the elderly parents/grandparents and meaningful, whereas in Netzer’s (1994)
study with elder parents, getting support part of normative solidarity and functional sol-
idarity were interacting and statistically significant. In this context, it can be argued that
those who have higher normative solidarity in their families are interested in giving sup-
port to elderly parents and giving them material-spiritual support.
Bengtson and Roberts (1991) defined conventional solidarity as consensus and attitude
unity of family members regarding values, attitudes and beliefs, while a statistically sig-
nificant interaction and relationship between normative and conventional solidarity was
found in the study, as expected. Demirbilek (2001) expresses the relation between norms
and values as the individual should be able to socialize and shape her/his norms and val-
ues according to the individuals around her/him in order to become a member of society.
In this context, it is possible to state that normative solidarity and conventional solidarity
are essentially intertwined and interrelated concepts from the elements of solidarity which
are the most basic structure of the society and it is anticipated as an expected result in
the study that these two social elements are in interaction.
In the study; use no significant effect of Relational Solidarity, Getting Support from Par-
ent/Grandparent (Functional Solidarity), Emotional Solidarity, Geographical Distance with
Parent/Grandparent, Health Status of Parent/Grandparent, Health Status of Participant
factors on Intergenerational Normative Solidarity (p> 0,05). Attitudes and behaviors on
normative solidarity is a process spread to years in the effort of individual to become an
individual and socialize, therefore it may not be expected to be in high interaction with
many variables, however, while it is seen as interacting and statistically significant in
some studies in the literature, it was seen that Health Status Parent/Grandparent and Par-
ticipant factors of structural solidarity was statistically significant and interacting (Crim-
mins and Ingegneri, 1990; Lee et al., 1994b; Seelbach, 1978). In some studies, the health
status is statistically insignificant factor but the geographical distance is statistically sig-
nificant and interacts with normative solidarity (Netzer 1994).
There is an impression that the socially accepted normative structure of family does not
differ according to many socio-demographic variables. Kağıtçıbaşı (2008), on the other
hand, argues that families who are in the middle socio-economic level are the ones that
best conform to the social norms, that the behavior of not conforming to the social norms
